Little Gem_Table Top Mountain

If you are looking for a short distanced hike, with beautiful sceneries, this is a great trail to get your blood pumping, and It takes less than 10 minutes' drive from Picnic Point in Toowoomba.

Even though this hike only has a 2km return distance in total, it is no walk in the park. If you are just started with hiking, and have not done any class 5 and above tracks, I would not recommend to attempt this. It is a steep hike and involves some less extensive rock scrambling. If you are taking children for this walk, please be careful as most of the track is very close to cliff edges.

To get there, drive to the end of the Table Top Mountain Road. The last bit of the drive is on gravel road, but it is in a relatively good condition. Once you reach, you will see the trail head going up the first peak immediately. There is no sign post for this walk, however, given you are essentially following the ridgeline, it is easy to follow. The view down the valley beneath the first peak is magnificent (in my opinion), I definitely would recommend to stop for sometime and take it all in.

From Picnic Point, you will be able to identify this mountain straight away because it's shaped flat and round at the top. This is the second and the main peak which is only visible once you reach the top of its first peak. From the first peak, continue along the ridgeline by scrambling slightly downhill along the cylinder shaped rocks. Once you reach the bottom of the hill, you would see the rock filled track uphill, be careful not to slip. When you get to the end, you are at the bottom of the main peak. With the final scramble up a small rockface, you will be greeted with the endless golden grass on top of the main peak.

It's a 360 degree view on top, so take your time and explore around. You will also be able to see the vast Lockyer Valley, the hills and lookouts around Toowoomba city. The giant cacti that the grow along the edges of the mountain, with blooming flowers, are an added bonus to the already beautiful sceneries. There is so much history and beauty in this place, it would be a shame for you to miss it!

Hope you have been able to do some exploring of your own given the current COVID situation, and if you are ever in Toowoomba, hope this place becomes another hiking option for you.
